By Leah Bermudez, 6th grade

What makes a great teacher? Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. Here are the top seven things that make a good teacher according to the students. Take a look at the following below, compiled by students at Mater Gardens Academy.

#1    A high achieving teacher sets high goals for all students

By the end of the school year the teacher will expect the students to understand what they have learned.

#2     Great teachers are prepared and organized for the day.

Good teachers have the pride to wake up early and be ready to present their lessons in clear and structured way.

#3     Great teachers engage students and get them to look at issues in a variety of ways.

EXAMPLE: Math teacher :  2+10=12  10+2=12   These math problems are the same but taught in different ways . Just like the math problems  they could teach any other subject.

#4     Great teachers form strong  relationships with their students and show that they care about them .

Great teachers care about their students. Teachers with these qualities are known to stay after school and make themselves available for students and parents who need them . They are involved in school-wide committees and activities.

#5     Great teachers are masters at their subject

Good teachers don’t show up in the class not knowing what they are suppose to teach. They have to study the material they are going to teach the next day.

#6      Great teachers communicate frequently with parents.

They reach parents through conferences and frequent written reports home. If the teacher has a concern about a student, for example, if the students is not paying attention the teacher should get in touch with their parents.

#7      Great teachers have clear, written-out objectives.

Good teachers don’t have messy hand writing, the students wont be able to understand what the teacher is trying to write. For example, if the teacher has messy handwriting it is difficult to read and the student won’t be able to make the necessary corrections. Therefore, it is likely that the parents will send an email or complain to the office because the student got a bad grade.
